Password Protect PDF

Permissions
What a reader may do once the file is open.
Which password do I need?
An open password is asked for before the document will display at all. An owner password leaves the file readable by anyone but restricts printing, copying and editing.
Permissions are a request to the reader software, not a guarantee — treat them as a deterrent, and use an open password for anything genuinely confidential.
